King & Country · WWII U.S. Marines · USMC016

USMC016 shows a standing Marine hauling a wounded man backward by his upper clothing. The casualty lies with his legs extended and one arm lifted, while the rescuer bends into the effort. The photograph shows the pair from different angles; the release contains two figures, not two separate rescue teams.

King & Country USMC016 No Marine Left Behind shown from multiple angles
King & Country reference views of USMC016. Two Marines: a rescuer dragging a wounded comrade.

Before the stretcher arrives

Removing a casualty began before an aid station or hospital ship came into view. In its wartime account of Iwo Jima, the Navy recorded heavy losses among corpsmen moving forward to treat the wounded. A man’s immediate comrades might therefore have to pull him out of a dangerous position before organized evacuation could start.

That is the particular moment represented here. Unlike USMC025’s four stretcher bearers or USMC044’s kneeling corpsman, this rescuer is still physically moving the casualty. The comparison gives the medical subjects a sequence: extraction, treatment and transport are related tasks, but they are not interchangeable poses.

Review

The unequal body positions make the effort convincing in the reference views. One man is upright but strained; the other cannot help himself. It is an effective two-figure composition because the contact between them explains the story immediately, with no title needed to supply the missing action.
