King & Country · First World War · FW060
FW060 gives Joseph Joffre a compact, confident stance: dark tunic, red trousers, kepi, binoculars and sword. The colourful portrait belongs to the French opening-war group, but its history is more complicated than the reassuring nickname “Papa” suggests.

A title worth clarifying
Some catalog entries display the broader heading “Vive la France 1914” in place of the figure’s name. The individual product description identifies FW060 as General Joffre. Record the person and code together when searching; the range heading alone can lead to unrelated French infantry releases.
The Marne, and the limits of the reputation
Joffre’s opening offensives failed, yet he helped turn a retreating French army back toward a counter-attack at the Marne. The International Encyclopedia of the First World War biography also explains that his mixed record led to his removal from his positions at the end of 1916. That combination of recovery and failure gives the figure a more useful historical context than unqualified praise.
A conversation across the Allied command
FW024, Sir John French, is a natural comparison for a display about coalition leadership. Present them as two commanders with distinct national responsibilities, rather than claiming the miniatures reproduce a photographed meeting. Keep Joffre’s binoculars, kepi and sword visible when arranging the group. When buying, inspect those small projecting parts and the separation between the boots and base. The red trousers are also a good place to compare paint condition, as wear along raised folds is easy to see in a clear photograph.
