King & Country · First World War · FW001

Wilhelm II enters the FW range in immaculate uniform, with a spiked helmet, decorations and a walking stick. FW001 makes a useful starting point for a display about the people who commanded armies—and the distance between their public image and the war their soldiers experienced.

Reading the portrait

The pale field-grey uniform provides a restrained background for the red trim and metallic insignia. The moustache, upright posture and hand resting on the stick do the work of identification without a dramatic action pose. In the saved King & Country photograph, the boots and leg bindings introduce more texture than the neat tunic. It is a figure designed to be examined from the front, where the decorations and facial modelling are clearest.

A small headquarters group

Place FW001 beside the aide-de-camp FW002, with the open staff car FW013 a little behind them. The three subjects create a readable inspection scene: the public figure, the staff member who enables his work, and the transport that moves headquarters personnel. Keep a gap around the Kaiser so the walking stick and outline remain visible. A crowded firing-line arrangement would obscure what this particular sculpt is about.

What to inspect on a loose example

Ask for a close view of the helmet spike, stick and sword area. The protruding parts are easier to bend than the central casting, and dark repair paint can disappear in a poorly lit listing. Compare the face and chest decorations with the reference photograph; heavy repainting can flatten these small details. A matching FW001 label supports identification, but the figure itself should still agree with the photograph.
