The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD371

Churchill holds a Thompson submachine gun while a bulldog stands at his feet. The pinstriped trousers, dark jacket and cigar turn DD371 into a compact portrait with several instantly recognizable visual cues.

The photograph behind the pose

The original release says the figure was inspired by a wartime photograph. Imperial War Museums identifies the familiar Thompson photograph with Churchill’s visit to coastal defenses near Hartlepool on 31 July 1940.

During the visit, the weapon’s mechanism was explained to him. IWM also notes that Nazi propaganda used the gun’s association with American gangsters to attack Churchill’s image. The same photograph could therefore carry opposing meanings for different audiences.

The bulldog is part of the model’s interpretation

The dog reinforces the defiant character of the miniature, but its inclusion should not be treated as proof that an animal stood beside Churchill in the reference photograph.

This is a sculpted interpretation combining the armed pose with another familiar symbol. That distinction makes it more interesting to compare the model with the historical image.

A small portrait with a strong outline

The vertical figure and low animal create two levels of interest. A plain base gives the bulldog enough space to remain visible beside Churchill’s legs.

Although cataloged in the DD range, the represented photographic moment belongs to 1940, four years before the Normandy landings. It can sit within a broader wartime leadership display without being labeled a D-Day appearance.

Released in June 2023, DD371 offers a conversation piece about how a leader’s public image was constructed, contested and later translated into a collectible miniature.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived DD371 product record lists a release date of June 2023. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
