The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD291

DD291 depicts Eisenhower in the longer, four-pocket officer’s jacket, with his hands behind his back. King & Country describes him holding plans for Operation Overlord, giving the quiet standing portrait a connection to the preparations for Normandy.

The uniform distinguishes this Ike

The dark jacket extends below the waist above the lighter trousers. Its shape contrasts directly with DD284’s short Ike jacket, even though the two releases portray the same man.

That makes the pair useful for a uniform comparison. The difference is visible in the hem and pocket arrangement without requiring the viewer to identify subtle facial details.

Two documents reveal different sides of command

The Eisenhower Presidential Library’s D-Day collection preserves both the confident Order of the Day and the unused statement prepared in case the landings failed. The latter accepted personal responsibility for the decision.

Read together, they give this restrained portrait an interesting historical background: public encouragement and private provision for failure existed alongside the same operation.

The papers sculpted with the figure are identified by the manufacturer as invasion plans. They should not be described as miniature copies of either surviving statement.

A commander among several kinds of subject

The DD collection includes men preparing to jump, troops in action, casualties and dismounted vehicle crews. Eisenhower introduces the command perspective to those smaller experiences.

A headquarters setting can suggest that role, but the portrait does not need a crowded map table to be understood. Leave the face and uniform visible, with enough room behind to appreciate the hand position.

Why this version belongs beside DD284

The longer jacket and Overlord connection give DD291 its own identity. It is more than another nameplate portrait: the clothing supplies the visible distinction, while the surviving D-Day documents offer a route into the decisions behind the familiar image of the Allied commander.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived DD291 product record lists a release date of May 2016 and a retirement date of April 2021. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
