The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD078
The long barrel is the first thing to notice on DD078, but the five crew figures keep this from being a vehicle-only subject. The M12 is a large artillery piece whose working space remains open to view.

A chassis detail worth getting right
Some archived retail copy calls this a Sherman-based vehicle. The wartime U.S. Army identification manual FM 30-40 identifies the M12’s chassis as derived from the M3 medium tank.
That correction matters because familiar family resemblance can lead to a misleading label. A self-propelled gun deserves identification by its actual type, not simply by the nearest recognizable tank name.
The model includes a working group
The release record specifies five full-body crewmen. In the reference photograph, the gun’s length and the open rear arrangement give those men a setting that a closed turret would conceal.
The figures help explain the artillery subject at a glance. Their scale beside the weapon is part of the effect, not just an optional decoration around the hull.
Give the barrel its full space
A three-quarter view can show the vehicle, weapon and crew together. Before choosing a shelf position, allow for the barrel’s projection as well as the footprint of the tracks.
A clear background makes it easier to follow the shape of the mounting and to see the people working around it.
Why this belongs beside, rather than among, generic tanks
DD078 adds a specific self-propelled artillery subject to the Allied collection. Its code, five-figure complement and open gun arrangement are all important when comparing examples. A listing that shows only the vehicle can miss a substantial part of the original release.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived DD078 product record lists a release date of June 2007 and a retirement date of September 2008. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
