The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD070

DD070 pairs a paratrooper officer with a place name that immediately locates the story: Sainte-Mère-Église. Benjamin Vandervoort leans on a stick, an unusually specific detail in a range full of armed, advancing figures.

The injured officer who kept commanding

Vandervoort commanded the 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the 82nd Airborne Division. He injured his ankle during the Normandy jump and continued to lead his men in the fighting around the town.

The U.S. Army’s account of the 505th in Normandy gives the wider airborne context. The stick is therefore more than a device for making one officer’s silhouette different.

Why the sign belongs with the figure

The saved photograph shows the town sign as part of the release. It acts almost like a caption within the miniature scene, connecting the individual with the place.

That is worth remembering when identifying a loose figure. The officer alone may look like a general airborne subject; the original combination explains a particular historical association.

History and the screen version

The archived product description connects Vandervoort with John Wayne’s portrayal in The Longest Day. A film can be the route by which a collector discovers the officer, while the catalog provides the name and unit behind that recognition.

DD070 earns its place through that unusually focused combination of person, injury and location. Keep the sign close enough to read with the figure, and allow the supporting stick to remain visible. Both details carry the story without a crowded diorama around them.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived DD070 product record lists a release date of June 2006 and a retirement date of May 2009. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
