The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD069
A pointing arm can say more than an elaborate base. DD069 depicts Norman “Dutch” Cota in a helmet and field uniform, directing attention beyond the figure. It is a small portrait of command exercised close to the fighting.

The man behind the familiar film character
Cota served as assistant commander of the 29th Infantry Division during the Normandy landings. The archived release description explicitly identifies the real officer as its subject, while noting Robert Mitchum’s portrayal in The Longest Day.
That distinction is useful for anyone collecting both military history and cinema subjects. A recognizable name does not automatically make the miniature a portrait of the actor.
Omaha required decisions on the ground
The U.S. Army’s account of Omaha Beach records Cota’s part in encouraging troops to move inland from the exposed beach. His importance was tied to the immediate problem of getting men moving in a disorganized and dangerous situation.
The sculpt’s gesture gives a collector a way to explore that kind of leadership without needing an invented speech or a dramatic quotation attached to the base.
A portrait that can join a larger scene
Beside American infantry, the pointing pose creates an interaction. Displayed alone with a name label, it works as a compact biographical subject. Those are two different readings of the same figure.
For the catalog, DD069 adds a named participant to the wider invasion story. It also makes a useful comparison with the more formal general-officer portraits elsewhere in the DD range: here, the pose is about directing action.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived DD069 product record lists a release date of June 2006 and a retirement date of May 2009. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
