The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD040
DD040 is about the ride. Four seated American soldiers turn a truck’s open load space into a troop-carrying scene, adding faces and body language to a vehicle that might otherwise sit empty.

The truck in the photograph is context
The original release description calls this the accompaniment to DD039. It specifies four GIs, with three joined together and the fourth sitting separately. The truck itself is a separate release.
That distinction is particularly useful here because the reference photo shows the passengers in position inside the vehicle. A buyer comparing listings should establish whether an offer includes the passenger group, the truck, or both.
A journey has its own historical interest
Motor transport connected the beachhead, supply areas and fighting units. The National WWII Museum’s CCKW account explains the broad utility of the American 2½-ton truck.
Seated passengers let a collection suggest that movement without showing another attack. The scene might be a halt or part of a road journey; the figures do not identify a particular trip, and there is no need to invent one for them.
Look at the spacing between the men
The joined trio preserves a relationship between three poses, while the separate fourth figure offers some flexibility. Before planning another vehicle pairing, compare the seat height and available space rather than assuming that any similarly sized truck will fit.
The truck sides can hide a surprising amount of a seated figure. A viewing angle from slightly above helps the faces, helmets and carried equipment remain visible.
Why passengers deserve an individual entry
Small accessory groups can become anonymous when boxes are lost. Recording DD040 separately preserves the original count and the unusual three-plus-one construction. It also gives collectors a way to find the missing people in an otherwise complete truck display, with a reference image that shows their intended relationship to the vehicle.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived DD040 product record lists July 2003 as the release date and July 2005 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
