The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD036

DD036 is a small study in teamwork. Its four 101st Airborne figures have different tasks, different heights and different weapons, yet their attention runs in the same direction. That makes “Covering Fire” unusually easy to read as a group.

Follow the action from the ground up

The prone .30-calibre machine gunner anchors the composition. Above him, a kneeling rifleman uses a rifle grenade, a standing sniper shoulders his weapon, and a sergeant directs the action. These are the roles identified in the original product description; the reference photograph shows how King & Country fitted them together.

The changes in height matter. The sculpted group creates movement without requiring every figure to run, and each weapon remains visible when the bases are staggered slightly.

After the jump came the ground fighting

The U.S. Army’s D-Day history describes the 101st and 82nd Airborne landings behind Utah Beach. Scattered drops left men gathering into groups and working toward their objectives on the ground. DD036 belongs to that subsequent fighting, rather than the familiar moment of stepping out of an aircraft.

It is a useful reminder of how much an airborne collection can show after the parachutes have disappeared from view. Roads, fields and village edges offer a setting without needing a named encounter invented for the figures.

Give the team something to support

Position another group moving off to one side and the title begins to make visual sense. A low bank can help frame the prone gunner, provided it does not conceal the weapon. Leave the rifle-grenade figure enough open space above and ahead.

The set earns its place through that division of labour. It provides a complete little supporting group while retaining four distinct silhouettes—particularly useful when comparing the early multi-figure airborne releases.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived DD036 product record lists July 2003 as the release date and September 2006 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
