The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD033
Four attacking infantrymen might sound like a straightforward addition to a World War II shelf. DD033 becomes more interesting once you ask which infantrymen they represent. The answer takes this King & Country set toward the Mediterranean and southern France, adding a different chapter to a range so closely associated with Normandy.

Introducing the patrol
DD033 is the retired four-man “Attacking” group, also found under titles such as “Attacking Infantry” and “Attack Patrol.” Sager’s product record identifies both DD033 and the related DD032 mortar team as 3rd Infantry Division subjects. It dates the release to September 2002. King & Country included DD033 in its August 2006 retirement announcement; Sager’s lists September 2006 as the retirement date.
The catalog photograph shows a group with a clear rhythm. The kneeling rifleman on the right establishes a low firing position, while the other figures bring movement and changes of height. Their weapons point at different angles without making the group feel disconnected. It is easy to imagine them spread along a wall or moving past the corner of a building.
The other invasion of France
For the 3rd Infantry Division, the invasion of France meant a landing on the Mediterranean coast on 15 August 1944. Operation Dragoon opened a second Allied landing front in France, far from the Normandy beaches. The division brought experience from earlier fighting around the Mediterranean into the campaign. The Army’s Dragoon remembrance connects the division with that assault, while the wartime operational account preserved by the Combined Arms Research Library provides a deeper route into its advance.
That is the historical opening DD033 offers a collection. A DD display can include the liberation of southern France as well as the more familiar June landings. The set need not be forced into a scene just because its product code begins with those two letters.
The Audie Murphy connection—and its limit
Sager’s describes the 3rd Infantry Division as Audie Murphy’s unit. That is a useful invitation to learn about the formation, but it does not identify any of these four figures as Murphy. The catalog presents an infantry patrol, not a named personality set. Keeping that distinction clear leaves plenty of room for the soldiers’ collective story.
Three ways to display the group
- A village edge: use a low wall or building corner, leaving the kneeling rifleman’s line of sight open.
- A broader infantry scene: place the related DD032 mortar team farther back, with a visible gap between the advancing men and their support weapon.
- A simple figure study: keep the four on a plain base so their poses and equipment remain the focus.
These are display ideas, not reconstructions of a particular engagement. The best arrangement is the one that lets you see why each figure is there. Try several spacings before committing to scenery; the group’s shape changes noticeably when the men are staggered rather than lined up.
Buying and identification notes
Check for all four intended figures, not merely four King & Country Americans of a similar period. Compare the poses with the catalog image and ask for close-ups of projecting weapons, hands, helmet edges, and bases. Matching the figures matters more than a seller’s broad “D-Day infantry” description. Original packaging is useful for identification, but it does not replace checking the contents.
DD033 is a strong candidate for collectors who enjoy building a scene around a unit’s history. Its four soldiers can fill a shelf space; their 3rd Division connection can open up a whole new reading list.
