The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL093
AL093 gives the AL collection a sound to imagine. The bugler stands on foot with the instrument raised, offering a different musical subject from the mounted buglers associated with the charge.
A small instrument with a daily job
The product description frames the figure around the calls that structured a soldier’s day. The reference photograph shows the instrument at the mouth, the rifle carried behind and the figure standing upright. That combination makes the action easy to read without a band or a surrounding formation.
I would place him near the edge of a camp group, where the imagined call can reach the other figures. A modest amount of open space around the raised instrument keeps the silhouette clear.
A surviving instrument with a complicated story
The Australian War Memorial’s cavalry trumpet associated with Sergeant H. Gaitley is an interesting companion object. Its record discusses both the musical role and a claimed Beersheba connection that does not sit comfortably with his service paperwork.
That is a good example of why a memorable story should be checked against records. AL093 is not identified as Gaitley, and a standing bugler need not be connected to a famous charge to be historically worthwhile.
Where it fits in the collection
A bugler can organize a scene without physically interacting with another figure. The posture suggests that others are meant to listen. That makes AL093 useful beside resting men, saddling activity or a group about to move.
The release also broadens the range of duties represented by a single uniform. The Light Horse collection becomes more informative when it includes signals, routine and camp life alongside rifle fire. Here, the difference is carried by one raised instrument and the quiet vertical stance of the man playing it.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived AL093 product record lists October 2017 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
