The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL086
AL086 gives the New Zealand mounted subjects an officer of their own. The figure rides forward with a revolver directed toward the action, supplying a different weapon and a command focus beside the rifle-bearing Kiwi troopers.
A follow-up to the first New Zealand releases
The product description presents the officer as an addition following the earlier New Zealand figures. That release relationship is useful for collectors building a coherent group: AL072 through AL075 introduce dismounted, flag-bearing and mounted subjects, while AL086 adds the officer.
I would use the revolver’s direction to organize the nearby riders, rather than placing the officer in the middle simply because he is the leader. A slightly forward or offset position can make the group’s movement much easier to read.
Keep the campaign’s different actions distinct
The New Zealand Mounted Rifles’ fighting at Tel el Saba helped prepare the way for the capture of Beersheba. NZ History’s account distinguishes that action from the subsequent Australian mounted charge into the town.
For a collector, this is a helpful reminder that allied troops sharing a campaign did not necessarily share the same role in every famous episode. AL086 is a representative New Zealand officer, not an identified portrait that can automatically be attached to one named commander or moment.
What the revolver changes
The shorter weapon leaves a different outline from the long rifle-and-bayonet subjects. That visual difference can be especially useful when photographing a compact mounted group, where overlapping barrels otherwise become confusing.
The release earns its place by completing the range of roles available to the New Zealand collection. With a flagbearer, riflemen and a dismounted figure, it helps the group become more than a few isolated Kiwi subjects within an Australian-titled series.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived AL086 product record lists April 2017 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
