The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL040

AL040 slows the whole collection down. A trooper kneels beside a fallen horse, attending to the animal at a moment when the forward movement of a military scene has stopped. The set’s emotional centre is the relationship between rider and mount, and it needs very little scenery to communicate it.

The painting behind the pose

The product description credits Fortunino Matania’s wartime art as the inspiration. The National Army Museum records his 1916 image, “Good-bye Old Man”. King & Country’s title, “Goodbye Old Girl,” is different, so it is useful to keep the miniature’s catalog name and the artwork’s title distinct when searching for either.

This connection gives AL040 an unusual place in the range. It is not only a military subject; it is also an interpretation of an image through which people remembered the war. Moving that idea into three dimensions changes how the viewer encounters the horse and the kneeling man.

A horse was more than a way to travel

The Light Horse depended on its mounts for movement across difficult distances. The Australian War Memorial’s account of Walers describes the substantial combined load of rider and equipment they carried. Against that practical background, the tenderness of AL040 is especially affecting.

The scene should not be confused with a blanket claim that all Australian horses were shot after the war. That same account records that most of the surplus horses in the Middle East were sold, largely for service with the British Army in India.

Leave some silence around it

I would display this vignette with breathing room, perhaps slightly apart from a busy charge. Too many adjacent action figures can turn the fallen animal into a background detail. Here the restraint is the attraction: one man, one horse and a pause that broadens what a military miniature collection can say.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL040 product record lists November 2012 as the release date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
