Overview

AK095 puts a seated gunner behind a single 2 cm Flak 38 on its ground firing mount. The slim barrel projects from a shield that rises around the operator, while the low, spread-out base keeps the whole assembly close to the ground. King & Country’s sand-coloured finish is broken by dark wear marks, and the gunner’s position gives the weapon a clear working side. The release includes the gun and seated operator; the separate AK096 Flak Gun Crew should not be assumed to be in the box. This is a compact anti-aircraft position, rather than a complete battery, and it can fit beside a desert airfield or supply point without dominating everything around it.

Historical inspiration

Light anti-aircraft guns dealt with aircraft flying too low and fast for a leisurely engagement. The Flak 38’s 20 mm calibre placed it well below the famous 8.8 cm gun in size, but the smaller weapon had its own demanding routine of tracking, aiming and ammunition supply. An original German training film preserved by Imperial War Museums explains the weapon and its components, a reminder that operating the gun involved learned procedures rather than simply pointing a barrel upward. The seated man is therefore only the most visible part of the job. In a real emplacement, other crew members supported the gun’s operation, and a model of the operator alone captures one moment within that larger activity.

Build the scene around visibility. A gun hemmed in by tall buildings or stacked crates would have a poor view, so a low boundary of sandbags and some open space suit it better. Keep the muzzle clear of neighbouring figures and leave the gunner’s side visible. If extra crew are added, give them room to work around the mount rather than lining them up behind it. When looking at listings, separate the gun-and-gunner release from offers that combine it with additional figures. The barrel, shield, sighting details and feet of the mount are all worth seeing in close-up before deciding that the set is complete.
