Blue UN headgear and a long-handled detector make this Polish officer one of Del Prado’s clearest support-role subjects. The 1979 date places the figure near the end of UNEF II’s service in the Sinai.

A peacekeeping mission in the Sinai

UNEF II operated after the 1973 Arab-Israeli war and continued until July 1979. Poland contributed to the force, including logistical support. United Nations reporting also records mine-clearing work by the Polish contingent, giving the model’s equipment a documented mission context.

The figure represents a demining officer rather than an ordinary rifleman in blue headgear. Its place in a twentieth-century military collection shows how service could involve restoring movement and reducing the danger left by earlier fighting.

The detector defines the pose

The photograph shows a grey-green uniform, bright blue headgear and equipment carried over the torso. A long shaft extends from the hand down toward a detector head near the ground. The slightly forward stance directs attention to that lower end rather than to the face.

Follow the equipment around the figure when comparing a loose example. A missing detector head or damaged cable can change the subject’s appearance substantially while leaving the body intact. An image cropped at ankle height is therefore not enough to assess completeness.

Inspect the equipment before the paint

Ask for a view showing the full detector, hand grip and any thin connections to the carried equipment. Check the shaft from two directions for bends. The blue headgear, boot fronts and base corners are useful places to examine for wear.

Handle the figure by the base and keep packing material clear of the detector. Its low position can make it vulnerable to a neighbouring base sliding against it in a box.

This officer works particularly well in a group about military support, beside a medic, signals operator or military policeman. Separate labels explain the different jobs without suggesting a shared unit. When photographing him, leave visible ground around the detector head so the viewer can understand the equipment’s complete shape. That space is as important to this composition as clearance above a flagstaff is to a standard bearer.
