Beresford’s richly braided uniform makes an imposing standing portrait. The more useful story is his work with the Portuguese Army and the difficult coalition command represented by the year 1811.

A British officer with a Portuguese command

The National Army Museum’s Beresford portrait record describes his appointment to command and reorganise the Portuguese Army after Corunna in 1809. That role gives the figure a place beyond a shelf of British generals. A collection caption should acknowledge the Portuguese soldiers and institutions involved, rather than treating the army as an unnamed extension of one man.

Read the portrait as a choice

The blue coat, bright braiding, red waist area and tall plume establish rank and distinction. The hands-at-the-hips posture makes the body broad and self-possessed. Such a pose tells us how a manufacturer chose to present command; it does not prove that the historical person was calm or certain during every decision. The contrast between formal appearance and the problems of coalition warfare gives the article its substance.

A useful Peninsula pairing

Place Beresford beside separately identified British and Portuguese subjects, or with a map locating Albuera. Keep the figure’s 1811 date visible rather than defaulting every Napoleonic command group to Waterloo. Inspect the plume, sword fittings, hands and painted braid when buying. A clear name and period are more useful than a loosely assigned issue code. The release helps a collection explain the organisation and allied participation behind a familiar British military career.
