Del Prado · Figure study

The white kepi is familiar, but the submachine gun and field clothing place this legionnaire firmly after the world wars. The 1957 setting belongs to the Algerian War and deserves its own historical category.

The collection name is not the conflict date

Retailers sometimes group this figure under “Soldiers of the Two World Wars.” The subject date is nevertheless 1957. The French defence ministry’s history of military operations in Algeria places the fighting within the war over Algerian independence. Cataloging by subject rather than packaging prevents a postwar figure from disappearing into a misleading Second World War filter.

The setting needs more than an adventure story

The Algerian War involved military operations, colonial authority, independence movements and civilians caught in violence. A legionnaire’s uniform is one part of that history. The sculpt does not identify a named man or establish his individual actions, so it should neither inherit an invented biography nor turn the conflict into an uncomplicated account of desert soldiering. A precise place-and-date caption is a better starting point.

Two Legion figures, two different worlds

Display this figure beside the blue-and-red 1914 legionnaire to examine changes in dress and weaponry across more than forty years. Keep the dates prominent. When buying, inspect the kepi rim, gun barrel and magazine area, hands and scarf edges. The reference photograph may show a booklet behind the model, but the retailer notes that the figure can be sold without it; confirm the actual contents of the listing. The historical value lies in making the postwar setting explicit.
