Del Prado · Napoleonic Wars · Austria, 1809
A tall civilian-looking hat and a small pale object in the hand make this officer stand apart from the shako-wearing regulars. The Carinthian Landwehr subject adds a provincial Austrian presence to the Del Prado Napoleonic range.

Landwehr in the Austrian army
Austria organised its Landwehr in 1808 as a territorial force, drawing on provincial communities as part of preparations for renewed war. Carinthia was one of the regions represented. These troops should not be confused with Prussian Landwehr simply because both used the same German term.
The 1809 date places this officer in the year of Austria’s war against Napoleon. It provides the campaign context without establishing the man’s presence at a particular battle. Regional identity is the strongest feature of the title and deserves to remain visible in the catalog.
An unusual officer silhouette
The photograph shows a standing figure wearing a tall black hat, dark coat and trousers. One hand holds a light rectangular object near the chest; the other hangs lower. The arrangement suggests an officer occupied with information, although the small photograph cannot establish exactly what is written or represented on that object.
The hat’s broad brim separates him immediately from many regular infantry subjects. Look at its shape, the arm position and the coat outline when checking a loose example. Those features are useful even when a seller has supplied only a vague “Austrian officer” title.
A small figure with exposed details
Check the hat brim all the way around and request a clear view of the raised hand. The pale object can show chips readily, while the dark sleeve may hide a repair at the wrist. Confirm that the figure stands level on its base.
Display him beside an Austrian regular or across from a French officer dated to the same campaign. The difference in headgear supplies the visual comparison; a concise label supplies the provincial context that the miniature alone cannot explain.
The hand-held object gives this officer a useful place in a command-themed group. Face him toward another officer and leave the space between their hands clear. The arrangement suggests administration or discussion without requiring the collector to decide whether the pale rectangle represents a map, a message or another kind of paper.
