Del Prado · Figure study

The feathered hat and walking staff make this Italian soldier instantly different from the desert subjects. The Alpini sergeant brings mountain service, movement and terrain into the Del Prado collection.

A corps created for mountain borders

The Italian Army’s history of the Alpini dates their establishment to 1872 for the defence of mountainous frontiers. It also traces expansion into six divisions during the Second World War. The 1940 figure belongs to that longer specialisation, rather than representing every Italian infantryman of the period.

Mountains affect the whole military problem

Steep routes constrain movement and the amount of equipment that can be carried or delivered. The miniature can introduce those practical questions without requiring a snow-covered diorama. A rocky path or modest change in level is enough. Avoid assuming that all mountain service took place in winter, or that an Alpini label establishes one specific 1940 operation. The reference identifies the role and year, not a personal campaign record.

A useful Italian comparison

Beside the Tobruk assault engineer, the hat, staff and slung rifle make specialisation visible. One subject suggests movement through difficult terrain, the other the approach to a defended obstacle. Keep the different places and dates clear. For condition, check the feather and staff first, then the rifle and its sling. These long, thin components are the easiest parts to lose and the most important for the figure’s identity. A complete silhouette is more informative than an unsupported claim that a loose example is a particular regiment.
