King & Country AL106 Trooper Mounting Up (Black Horse)

The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL106

Before a horseman can ride anywhere, he has to get into the saddle. AL106 catches that everyday movement with the trooper on foot beside a black horse, both hands reaching up toward the saddle. It is a welcome change from the instant of a charge.

A working relationship at ground level

King & Country’s model description identifies the man as preparing to hoist himself onto his mount. The rider and horse are still at different levels, allowing the viewer to see the equipment from an unusual angle.

The slung rifle runs across the man’s back while the pale saddle load stands out against the black coat. White lower-leg markings give the animal small points of contrast. The man’s raised arms direct attention to the point where his weight will transfer to the horse.

The horse lines were part of military life

Frank Hurley’s photograph of men tending horses beside an oasis, preserved by the Australian War Memorial and dated around 1918, offers a quieter view of the Light Horse campaign. The animals required time and attention between movements and battles.

AL106 fits that daily setting particularly well. It can suggest a patrol preparing to leave, or a man joining companions who are already mounted, without needing an invented combat incident.

Black horse or brown horse?

AL108 uses the same trooper subject with a brown horse. The colour difference is an intentional catalog variant, so both releases deserve their own code and photograph.

I would place AL106 near a standing horse or a fully mounted figure, letting the different stages of preparation tell the story. Keep the saddle and raised hands visible from the chosen viewing angle. The interest is in a familiar movement often skipped by military miniatures: the short, practical transition that makes every later mounted action possible.

Release record and collecting notes

King & Country’s AL106 release reference identifies this model without giving a release or retirement date on the linked page. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
