King & Country AL027 Australian Staff Officer

The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL027

AL027 has both binoculars and a document case or folder in view. One object helps the officer observe the ground; the other suggests the information he must carry away from it. The result is a small figure with a very clear purpose, even without a horse or weapon raised.

A staff officer with a named release story

The catalog identifies him as Major Jack Haldane of Chauvel’s headquarters, observing the defenses at Beersheba. That identification comes from the release description. The sculpt should be read as King & Country’s character portrayal rather than a separately authenticated portrait based on a specific surviving photograph.

In the reference image he wears shorts, long socks and a sun helmet. The binoculars cover much of the face, directing attention toward what he sees beyond the edge of the base.

Information had to reach the commander

The War Memorial’s photograph of an 8th Light Horse signal station at Tiberias shows how another part of the command system looked in September 1918. It is a different place and date from this figure’s release story, but a useful reminder of the people and equipment involved in passing information.

Observation and communication provide a rewarding alternative subject for an AL collection. A battle depended on more than the men at the final point of contact.

Build outward from his gaze

Place him where his binoculars face open ground or a visible distant position. A nearby mounted commander and AL030’s signaling team can create a headquarters scene with several distinct tasks, rather than a group of officers simply standing together.

The folder adds a warm block of colour beside the khaki clothing and makes the pose recognizable in a mixed lot. Keep the binoculars, hands and document area clear when photographing the figure. AL027 is particularly useful for a collector who wants the range to explain how a campaign was watched, organized and directed.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL027 product record lists a release date of December 2011 and a retirement date of August 2015. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
