The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL023

AL023 brings two figures into a single tense encounter. A dismounted Australian points his rifle toward a wounded Ottoman soldier seated on the ground, whose raised hand changes the meaning of the scene. The title is blunt; the relationship between the figures deserves a more careful look.

Two different levels, one shared moment

The standing light horseman leans forward while the wounded man occupies the lower part of the composition. The rifle line connects them, but so do their faces and the raised hand. Their separate positions make the scene legible without a building or trench section.

The catalog presents this as a confrontation involving a wounded opponent. The pose should not be used to imply that a particular documented incident took place, or that every capture during the campaign followed the same pattern.

Capture was part of the outcome

The War Memorial’s Beersheba anniversary account records the capture of Ottoman and German officers and hundreds of other ranks. The battle’s outcome included prisoners as well as the securing of the town and its water supply.

That makes the transition from combat to captivity a relevant historical subject. A miniature encounter can open that discussion, provided its dramatic title is kept distinct from the treatment owed to people who are wounded or surrendering.

Let the raised hand remain visible

The wounded figure’s gesture is essential. Place the pair where a viewer can see it clearly, with enough separation to read the interaction. Hiding the lower figure behind scenery leaves only the threatening rifle and loses much of the subject.

I would give this set a modest, uncluttered setting and a short contextual label. Its collecting interest lies in the fact that it tells a different kind of battlefield story from the mounted chargers. It asks the viewer to pause at the moment when an opponent becomes a prisoner, and when the scene’s human responsibilities change.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL023 product record lists a release date of July 2011 and a retirement date of September 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
