The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL021

AL021 stands on foot with his rifle held diagonally across his body. His slouch hat, boots and crossed equipment straps give him the familiar Light Horse appearance, but there is no charging mount beneath him. He belongs to the quieter work that continues around a battle.

Somebody had to stay behind

The release description places this man among those guarding supplies and headquarters while other members of the brigade advanced. That is a specific and useful collecting theme: a battle scene has a rear as well as a front.

The pose is watchful without being exaggerated. His head turns slightly, the rifle remains in his hands and the feet are set apart. He can acknowledge an approaching figure without looking as though he has already opened fire.

What a headquarters needs from a display

Put AL021 near an officer, a signaling group or a small stack of stores and the scene acquires a boundary. Someone is watching the approach while others carry out their tasks. The model gives those quieter subjects a reason to occupy the same space.

The War Memorial’s biography of Harry Chauvel describes the Desert Mounted Corps as a formation containing British, Australian and New Zealand units. Command at that scale depended on organization beyond the mounted men seen in a charge.

A useful bridge between two kinds of collection

AL021 fits both a Light Horse collection and a broader First World War infantry shelf. The dismounted pose makes his uniform easier to examine than on a crowded saddle: the belt equipment, lower legs and rifle are all in plain view.

I would resist surrounding him with too many props. One nearby officer or a visible path into the scene can be enough to suggest his guarding role. This is an understated figure whose purpose becomes clearer through placement, and whose presence keeps a display from implying that every soldier was doing the same thing at the same moment.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL021 product record lists a release date of July 2011 and a retirement date of September 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
