The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL014

AL014 rises sharply from its base. The black horse rears with its front legs lifted, while the rider’s body and outstretched arm create an equally energetic line above it. It is one of the most vertical action poses in the early Australian Light Horse group.

Look carefully at the pose

The title calls him a “Leaping Light Horseman.” In the reference photograph, the horse’s raised forequarters and the rider’s position provide the drama. There is no sandbag obstacle included here; that feature belongs to the later AL033 “Up and Over” release.

The dark animal makes the rider’s khaki clothing and pale equipment stand out. White markings on the lifted legs add small points of contrast. From the side, the figure has considerably more height and open space than the lower, forward-stretching charging horses.

Movement at the trenches was not a single neat picture

The War Memorial’s anniversary account of Beersheba preserves a rider’s description of choosing an opening in the trenches rather than simply jumping straight across them. Other men dismounted and fought on foot.

That varied experience helps put an expressive miniature in perspective. AL014 conveys the instability and energy of mounted action. It should not be treated as a literal record of an identified soldier performing a particular movement at a known point in the defenses.

The tall figure in a charging group

I would place him where the rearing outline can be seen against open space. A taller building immediately behind him can swallow the raised legs and the rider’s arm, losing much of the sculpt’s appeal.

Beside the horizontal motion of AL004 and AL005, he supplies a sudden upward beat. Check the supporting legs, projecting arm and overall alignment when looking at a secondhand example. The attraction of AL014 is the ambitious pose itself: it interrupts the smooth flow of a mounted group and gives the eye something unexpected to follow.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL014 product record lists a release date of December 2010 and a retirement date of November 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
