The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL004

Follow the rider’s outstretched arm and AL004 seems to keep moving beyond its base. The light horseman leans over a chestnut mount, presenting his bayonet ahead of him while his rifle stays slung across his back. It is one of the clearest action silhouettes in the early AL releases.

Why a bayonet is being carried like a sword

The weapon is the historical talking point. The Australian War Memorial’s retrospective on 1917 describes men at Beersheba riding with rifles slung and bayonets in hand. These mounted riflemen were adapting their infantry equipment to an unusual mounted assault.

That context gives meaning to a detail easily lost in a small listing photograph: the blade is separate from the rifle. The pose makes more sense once you look for both weapons instead of reading the forward projection as a cavalry sabre.

The horse supplies the momentum

The bright coat, extended legs and rider’s low posture all pull in the same direction. White markings interrupt the warm brown of the animal, while the saddle equipment adds a compact block of detail behind the rider.

At shelf distance the whole piece reads immediately. Closer inspection brings the eye back to the hands, reins and slung rifle. A side view is particularly rewarding because it keeps the weapon clear of the horse’s head.

A useful comparison with AL005

AL005 carries its bayonet toward the rear. Together the two releases vary the gestures within a charging group, without needing every man to repeat the same outline. I would offset them slightly, leaving open ground in front of AL004 so the extended arm remains visible.

This early figure earns its space through a very direct idea: one rider, one horse and an improvised weapon carried into a fast-moving encounter. It is also a good starting point for explaining why the Light Horse story cannot be reduced to the word “cavalry.”

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL004 product record lists a release date of December 2009 and a retirement date of April 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
