The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD259
A Scottish broadsword in one hand and a Thompson in the other make DD259 immediately recognizable. King & Country’s Jack Churchill stands in commando clothing with a wool cap and a notably unhurried pose, despite the unusual combination of weapons.

A real officer behind the nickname
The Commando Veterans Archive records John Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill’s service with Nos. 5 and 3 Commando, his wound during the Vaagso raid in December 1941 and his appointment to command No. 2 Commando in July 1942. He remained its commander until capture on Brač in 1944.
That gives the portrait a more useful historical foundation than a list of eccentric habits. The rank in the collectible’s title identifies the manufacturer’s portrayal; Churchill’s later command service included promotion to lieutenant colonel.
A veteran’s recollection challenges the familiar story
In the same archive entry, No. 2 Commando veteran Bob Bishop recalls Churchill’s sword and bagpipes but questions accounts placing him with a bow and arrows during that unit’s operations. Bishop distinguishes what he remembered seeing from stories repeated later.
That is a valuable retrospective detail. An unusual officer attracts unusual anecdotes, and the most entertaining version is not automatically the most reliable one.
What the miniature actually carries
The long sword slopes down beside the body, while the Thompson extends from the opposite hand. The two weapons create an open, balanced outline around the brown uniform.
Pale webbing crosses the chest, and dark footwear grounds the standing pose. The figure’s interest comes from those visible choices: the sculpt includes the sword and submachine gun, rather than trying to put every object associated with Churchill into his hands at once.
A named figure within an anonymous group
DD256, DD257 and DD260 offer anonymous commandos in different poses. Churchill gives that sequence a recognizable historical personality, although displaying them together does not turn the other figures into identified members of his unit.
Keep the sword fully visible and allow space around its tip. DD259 rewards both a close look at the sculpt and a closer reading of the man’s history, particularly where a veteran’s memory complicates the familiar legend.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived DD259 product record lists a release date of June 2015 and a retirement date of August 2018. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
