The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS044

WS044 puts three engineers into an inflatable boat, with paddles extending over the sides. The low hull makes the men’s arms and upper bodies the most active part of the composition.

The obstacle is part of the story

Rivers repeatedly shaped the campaigns in Europe. The National Army Museum’s account of 1940 places crossings of the Meuse within the German breakthrough in France.

That is useful wider context for an engineer boat, but the release does not identify WS044 as a particular boat at Sedan. Its subject remains a representative crossing.

The original three-man arrangement

The archived description specifies three assault engineers and their inflatable raft. The saved image shows the men within the boat, with different paddle positions giving the group a common activity.

The boat belongs to the release. A bridge, riverbank or additional landing party shown in a display would be separate scenery or figures.

A low subject needs a low horizon

Too much tall scenery immediately beside the hull can overwhelm the small group. Open water or a simple bank keeps the paddles and seated figures readable.

The boat’s broad outline also gives a collection a different shape from the narrow bases of walking infantry.

Why engineers broaden the WS range

WS044 directs attention to crossing an obstacle rather than firing a weapon. Alongside the work party in WS045 and the traffic scene in WS046, it records a set of supporting activities that make the series more varied.

Keep all three men and the boat associated in the collection record, even if the scene grows around them.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS044 product record lists a release date of September 2003 and a retirement date of September 2006. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
