The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD080

The salute in DD080 gives James Gavin a formal appearance. Instead of showing him in the middle of an airborne landing, King & Country presents a dress-uniform portrait associated with the 82nd Airborne Division.

His Normandy role needs a date

Gavin was the division’s assistant commander during the Normandy operation and became its commander in August 1944. Treating him as divisional commander throughout D-Day would flatten an important change in responsibility.

The U.S. Army’s West Point commemoration of Gavin places his airborne service within the invasion’s history. His own recollections also survive among the Cornelius Ryan papers held by Ohio University.

Why a dress portrait changes the display

The archived description identifies the saluting parade appearance. That makes the figure especially suited to a biographical grouping rather than a claim to show the exact uniform and pose of a moment in the Normandy fighting.

The raised hand is the focal point. A clear space beside the head keeps the gesture readable, even in a small cabinet of named officers.

From unit history to individual story

The DD airborne releases include anonymous soldiers, small encounters and named participants. Gavin’s portrait can introduce the leadership side of that collection, while a figure such as Vandervoort connects it with a battalion-level story.

Those links give the collector a route through the range without pretending that every pose belongs to one reconstructed event.

Why it belongs in the catalog

DD080 preserves a specific formal portrayal of a prominent airborne officer. Its value as a reference lies in the combination of name, division and sculpted presentation, alongside a careful distinction between his Normandy role and later command.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived DD080 product record lists a release date of June 2007 and a retirement date of June 2009. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
