The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL067

AL067 depicts an Ottoman infantryman staggering backward, wounded. The product title uses the period nickname “Johnny Turk,” but the miniature’s immediate subject is a person losing his balance after being hurt.

The cause is left open

The product description asks whether the soldier has been shot or struck in close combat. It does not settle the question. That uncertainty is useful to preserve: the figure can represent a casualty without the article inventing a precise weapon, attacker or historical identity.

I would arrange the set so the backward movement remains readable. Placing another figure directly behind him can make the pose seem physically impossible, whereas open space allows the viewer to understand the loss of balance.

A collection should show consequences on both sides

The AL range includes Australian rescue and medical subjects as well as Ottoman casualties. Looking at those together gives a more complete view than treating one side as named people and the other as scenery.

The NZ History account of the campaign’s 1917 fighting describes the Ottoman forces as organized armies conducting defence and withdrawal. That wider context is worth keeping in mind when a small vignette concentrates on one wounded soldier.

How much action to place around him

AL067 can form part of a combat scene, but it can also sit with a quieter aftermath group. The collector does not have to pair every casualty with an attacker at touching distance. A less crowded arrangement can give the figure more human presence.

Its place in a comprehensive catalog is the perspective it adds. The release records the consequences of fighting for an Ottoman soldier, broadening the range beyond weapons, uniforms and the forward movement of the mounted troops.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL067 product record lists July 2014 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
