The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL064
AL064 carries its defining detail across the trooper’s back: the rifle points to the left. That small change from the related AL063 is enough to alter how the figure sits among other mounted releases.
Why the direction matters
A long rifle creates a strong line through a small composition. Put several identical lines together and a group can look repetitive; vary them and the figures begin to separate visually. AL064 gives the collector another option without abandoning the shared equipment and character of the Light Horse subjects.
I would compare the figure from the intended viewing angle before committing it to a crowded arrangement. The left-pointing rifle can work well at one edge of a group, while another angle may hide it behind a neighbouring rider.
The carried weapon tells a different story
The product description places the rifle across the back rather than in a firing position. That supports a broader movement scene: men travelling, approaching or reorganizing, rather than all engaging an opponent at the same instant.
Contemporary accounts assembled in the Australian War Memorial’s Beersheba source collection show how much movement and preparation preceded the famous action. A carried-weapon subject can help a collection leave room for those stages.
A separate code worth keeping separate
AL064 is not merely a generic alternative photograph for AL063. The title records the distinct rifle direction, and a careful inventory should preserve that difference. It is particularly useful when checking a loose figure against an old label or a mixed collection listing.
Its place in the range is the quiet usefulness of variation. A few complementary riders can make a convincing group with less scenery and fewer repeated poses, provided the differences in their silhouettes are allowed to remain visible.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived AL064 product record lists July 2014 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
