The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL092

AL092 is the sort of set that starts a conversation across the room. A kangaroo and its Australian handler appear together in the AL range, bringing an unmistakable reminder of home into a collection set largely in Egypt and the Middle East.

The name belongs to the miniature’s story

King & Country calls the mascot “Skippy” and presents the pair in a friendly interaction. That gives the release a memorable catalog identity. It does not, by itself, establish the name or unit of a particular animal in a wartime photograph.

The distinction leaves plenty to enjoy. The kangaroo’s shape is immediately different from the horses and camels, and the handler gives it a human relationship rather than leaving it as a loose animal accessory.

Kangaroos really did travel with the troops

A December 1914 photograph at Mena Camp shows a soldier with a kangaroo mascot, with the pyramids beyond the tents. The Australian War Memorial notes that a number of units brought Australian animals to Egypt and that some later went to Cairo Zoo.

Another camp photograph captioned “Shake!” records an Australian soldier interacting with a kangaroo. These are wonderfully direct historical companions to the subject, even without identifying either animal as the one named in the miniature.

A different reason to collect an AL set

AL092 offers personality and a link to the men’s lives away from immediate combat. I would use it in a camp arrangement where the handler and animal remain the focus, rather than inserting the pair into a charge simply because they share a series code.

It is also an inviting entry point for visitors who know little about military miniatures. A kangaroo at an Egyptian camp is an unexpected enough image to lead naturally into the history behind the rest of the collection.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL092 product record lists October 2017 as the release date and May 2020 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
