The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL046

AL046 is a supporting subject with an important role. A second standing horse lets a collector suggest a group of mounts waiting behind dismounted men, while introducing variation into a scene that might otherwise rely on repeated copies of one animal.

A companion for the figures on foot

The product description expressly connects the standing horses with the range’s dismounted Light Horsemen and casualty subjects. That is a useful guide to the release’s purpose. The horse does not need a rider placed beside it at all times to make sense within the AL collection.

I would give the animal enough space to be seen as a separate form. In a tightly packed camp scene, legs and equipment can become lost behind standing figures. A small gap between horse and trooper often makes their relationship easier to understand than placing the bases edge to edge.

A surviving account of handing over the mounts

The Australian War Memorial’s account of Trooper James Sweeney records his writing about horses being handed to the Indian army because they could not return to Australia. It is a personal glimpse of the practical and emotional questions surrounding the animals after the fighting.

That account is broader context, rather than an identification of the horse represented by AL046. It is also a useful reminder not to reduce the fate of every wartime mount to one repeated legend.

Collecting a less dramatic subject

Standing horses bring a welcome pause between action pieces. AL046 can sit beside the feeding and saddling subjects, or help establish a sheltered area behind a dismounted group. Its appeal is not an elaborate narrative built into a single sculpt. It is the number of believable scenes that become possible once the collection includes the animals at rest as well as the animals in motion.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL046 product record lists April 2013 as the release date and June 2016 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
