The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL045

An empty horse can explain a shelf full of soldiers. AL045, “Standing Horse #1,” gives the AL collection a mount without a rider, opening up the quieter side of a series often associated with galloping action.

Empty does not mean unnecessary

Once riflemen have dismounted, their transport has not vanished. A standing horse can help connect a group of men on foot with the mounted unit they belong to. It also gives camp and resting scenes a convincing reason to exist beside the fighting subjects.

I would place AL045 behind the immediate action rather than beside an exposed firing position. Even a small change of elevation or a turn in the terrain can suggest shelter. The horse becomes part of the organization of the scene instead of a decorative animal filling unused space.

The men who stayed with the horses

The Australian War Memorial describes a four-man Light Horse section with one man holding the mounts while three fought. It is a compact historical detail with a large effect on how a collector might arrange dismounted figures.

A miniature display need not reproduce an entire section at literal strength to communicate the idea. One carefully positioned riderless horse can suggest the support arrangement beyond the figures immediately in view.

Compare the horse releases as individual records

AL045 and AL046 are separately coded standing-horse subjects. Later releases AL099 and AL100 revisit this part of the range, so a listing described only as “AL standing horse” deserves a closer look. Compare the pose and colouring to the correct code’s photograph before assuming the boxes or names are interchangeable.

For me, the collecting interest is the story these animals make possible. They give a mounted collection somewhere to stop, rest and reorganize, widening its visual vocabulary beyond the instant of an attack.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL045 product record lists April 2013 as the release date and June 2016 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
