The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL018
AL018 brings the Light Horse story down to one knee. The rifle is shouldered, the sightline is clear, and the figure’s broad kneeling stance gives it a settled, purposeful appearance. It is a useful reminder that a collection of mounted troops needs soldiers who have stepped out of the saddle.

The horse gets him there
The distinction between mounted infantry and conventional cavalry matters when looking at the AL range. Horses provided mobility, while rifles remained central to the men’s fighting role. The Australian War Memorial’s account of Light Horse organization describes a four-man section in which one man held the horses while the other three fought.
That small organizational detail suggests a much more interesting display than an uninterrupted row of galloping mounts. Put the firing men forward and their horses somewhere sheltered behind them, and the scene begins to explain how the unit operated.
A pose that gives the scene an edge
In the set photograph the slouch hat, crossed equipment and long rifle all remain easy to read. The rifle projects well beyond the body, so the direction it points deserves thought. A low rise or the edge of a shallow position can help establish a line of fire without hiding the figure’s lower half.
I would resist placing another standing miniature immediately in front of the muzzle. Even a loose shelf arrangement becomes more convincing when the figures have believable space to work. A loading figure alongside AL018 would introduce a second stage in the action and stop the position looking like a set of identical snapshots.
Its place in the range
This is a building-block figure with a clear identity. It can anchor the infantry side of an AL display or provide a quiet counterpoint to the movement of the mounted releases. The appeal is the readable pose and the tactical story it makes possible, rather than an unsupported claim about a particular named soldier.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived AL018 product record lists December 2010 as the release date and August 2015 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
