The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL020

AL020 is a close and uncomfortable scene: an Australian soldier leans over a fallen Ottoman opponent with a blade raised. The two bodies form one immediate encounter. It belongs to the most confrontational part of the AL range, where the sweeping movement of mounted figures gives way to individual struggle.

Two figures, one encounter

The reference photograph makes the relationship unambiguous. The Australian figure’s raised arm draws the eye upward, while the defending man’s outstretched hand pulls attention back toward the ground. Their interaction is the subject; adding a crowd around them can weaken it.

For that reason I would place AL020 low in a display, where both faces and the shapes of the arms remain visible. A modest stretch of broken ground is enough. Elaborate scenery is less useful here than an angle that lets the viewer understand what is happening.

Beyond the familiar charge picture

The mounted attack at Beersheba did not remain a single flowing line of riders. The Australian War Memorial’s account of the charge describes men of the 4th Regiment dismounting to fight at the trenches, while many of the 12th continued toward the town. That is helpful context for a ground-level combat subject, without turning AL020 into an authenticated portrait of one documented encounter.

Collecting both sides of the story

The Ottoman soldiers in the range give the campaign an opposing human presence. Treating them merely as scenery misses what a set like this actually depicts: two people in a violent confrontation. In a larger collection I would balance AL020 with quieter releases, such as a rescue or a camp scene. The contrast broadens the account of war and gives this intense vignette space to be considered on its own terms.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL020 product record lists December 2010 as the release date and May 2013 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
