The Operation ToyBox catalog · WH034

WH034 depicts Friedrich Paulus in a long coat on a wintry base. The restrained stance is central to the subject: this is a portrayal associated with captivity and defeat, not a victory parade.

The command that ended at Stalingrad

Paulus commanded the German Sixth Army. The Bundesarchiv’s account of the battle’s end distinguishes the fighting’s cessation on 31 January and 2 February 1943 in the different pockets.

That distinction avoids compressing the surrender of a large, fragmented force into a single neat moment. Stalingrad was a major German defeat, while the war in Europe continued for more than two years afterward.

A photographic connection

The release description says the sculpt draws on an image of Paulus entering Soviet captivity. A Bundesarchiv photograph presented by German History in Documents and Images provides historical context for that portrayal.

The photograph and miniature should still be treated as different objects. The sculpt is an interpretation, not a substitute for studying the original record.

Why the setting should remain restrained

The coat and pale ground already locate the figure’s mood. A clear name label and short Stalingrad context can do more than surrounding him with unrelated vehicles.

Within the WH collection, Paulus offers a specific named subject through which to examine command failure and the consequences of the war. Keeping the historical explanation beside the model gives that quiet pose its meaning.

Give the figure two dates and a clear caption

A useful display label separates the wartime subject from the miniature’s production history. For this figure, the historical reference is Stalingrad in 1943; August 2015 is the catalog release date. Putting only “2015” beside the figure would tell a visitor when the model appeared while leaving its subject unexplained.

Suggested display caption: Friedrich Paulus, commander of the German Sixth Army, depicted in a portrayal associated with Soviet captivity after Stalingrad. King & Country WH034; released August 2015.

The distinction matters when placing him beside other named commanders. Sharing the WH catalog prefix does not establish that two figures belong to the same historical meeting. A small, clearly explained display can communicate more than an impressive gathering of officers whose sculpted settings come from different moments.

The archival photograph linked above is a useful companion to the reference image of the miniature. Compare the posture and clothing, but keep each image’s identity clear: one records a historical person and moment, while the other shows a later interpretation made for collectors. That pairing lets a visitor see how a sculpt turns a documentary subject into a small object.

When photographing your own example, include the entire base as well as the face and coat. The pale ground contributes to this particular portrayal, and a tightly cropped portrait alone can lose that part of the model’s setting.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WH034 product record lists a release date of August 2015 and a retirement date of February 2020. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
