The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL051
AL051 is an invitation to look closely at the weapon. The AL range is full of rifles and bayonets, so a mounted swordsman immediately stands apart. That difference is the collecting attraction, but it also deserves a little historical care.

The product description calls it a legend
Sager’s record repeats the story that at least one Light Horse officer carried a sabre into the battle. It presents that as a legend, rather than supplying a named officer or a supporting primary account. I would preserve that distinction instead of turning the miniature into proof that a particular incident occurred.
AL051 remains an interesting release on its own terms: it offers a different weapon silhouette and a different interpretation of mounted action within the same range.
Bayonets were central to the familiar charge
The Australian War Memorial’s Beersheba source collection provides contemporary reports and other material for readers who want to go beyond later retellings. It is a better starting point for reconstructing the battle than assuming every dramatic feature of a miniature represents standard equipment or practice.
For a collection label, I would describe AL051 as King & Country’s “The Swordsman” and explain the story associated with it, leaving the unverified identity open.
Use the silhouette deliberately
A sabre-bearing rider gives the eye something different to follow among riflemen. Place the figure where the blade has a clear background and enough room around nearby flags or raised weapons. Crowding those thin shapes together diminishes the feature that makes the set distinctive.
The release belongs in a comprehensive AL catalog because the range includes interpretations and stories as well as representative troop types. Recording what is documented and what is anecdotal makes the article more useful, while still leaving room to enjoy the sculpt’s drama.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived AL051 product record lists April 2013 as the release date and September 2020 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
