The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL007A

A red Australian flag can make you pause if you are used to seeing blue. That pause is the appeal of AL007A. King & Country’s flagbearer brings a strong patch of colour to the AL range, but also opens a conversation about the symbols Australians carried overseas during the First World War.

Red does not simply mean an earlier design

The blue and red ensigns developed alongside one another after the 1901 flag competition. Their uses overlapped in public life for decades; the red flag was not simply replaced by a newly invented blue design after the war. The Australian government’s history of the national flag explains that distinction.

A particularly interesting surviving object is the red ensign presented to departing Imperial Reservists in 1914, now held by the Australian War Memorial. It demonstrates wartime use, although it does not establish that this particular miniature recreates a documented Light Horse flagbearer.

A focal point for the mounted collection

I would let the flag have a little empty space around it. Against a crowded backdrop its silhouette disappears; against a plain desert colour it immediately gives the eye somewhere to land. It also makes a useful counterpart to AL026, the range’s blue-flag subject. Displaying those releases together invites a better question than which colour looks nicer: what did each flag mean to the people carrying it?

That is why this belongs in a broad AL catalog. Alongside charging riders and everyday camp scenes, it adds the history of national identity. A collector can enjoy the visual drama while keeping a miniature’s symbolic presentation separate from photographic proof of a particular moment in battle.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL007A product record lists December 2009 as the release date and July 2021 as the retirement date. Those are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
