Del Prado · France · 1809
A green-coated dragoon sits over a chestnut horse, with pale straps and a crested helmet giving the rider a recognisable profile. This Del Prado subject offers a quieter view of the cavalry of 1809.

The headgear is the strongest identifying feature at the top of the figure. Below it, the green coat, light breeches and saddle equipment create a series of distinct areas that can be compared with a loose example. The horse’s restrained movement keeps attention on the soldier rather than on an exaggerated action pose.
A role between convenient categories
French cavalry organisation distinguished dragoons from the light regiments and from cuirassiers and carabiniers. Those categories are useful, but a miniature should not turn them into rigid rules about what a horseman could do. Dragoons belonged to an army that needed mounted troops for several kinds of work.
The year 1809 places this subject in the period of Napoleon’s war with Austria. The generic Grande Armée description does not specify a regiment or confirm a battlefield. It is enough to place the model within the campaign’s military setting without attaching a borrowed unit history.
Compare him with a dated regimental figure
The existing 16th Dragoon of 1814 makes a good companion. One label names a regiment and a later date; this one gives the broader army and 1809. Keep those differences visible instead of presenting the two as interchangeable green-coated Frenchmen.
For a secondhand purchase, examine the helmet crest, the long equipment alongside the rider and the horse’s ears. View the saddle connection from behind. Chips in the pale straps may look like intentional gaps when a photograph is small or heavily sharpened.
On the shelf, place the figure where the helmet can be seen against a simple background. A row of similarly coloured riders becomes much more informative when their headgear and dates remain readable. The interest here lies in comparison and context rather than a claim that the sculpt recreates a particular charge.
