King & Country · North Africa · AK022

AK022 works as a small sequence of connected tasks. One soldier handles a round, another crouches beside the mortar, and the third watches through binoculars. The figures direct attention from ammunition to weapon to observation, giving the set a clear internal story before any scenery is added.

The observer completes the group

The standing binocular figure is easy to treat as a spare officer in a loose collection, but the release description makes his function explicit: he watches the fall of shot. That matters when identifying an incomplete set. The crouching operator and mortar may be the obvious center, yet the observer supplies the visual connection to a target outside the base. Keep his view unobstructed in a display.

Read the poses as a team

The weapon sits low between the figures, while the binoculars draw the eye upward. Place the group so those two levels remain visible. A tall parapet can hide the mortar almost completely, reducing the scene to three disconnected heads. A low rise behind the men can suggest a position while leaving the barrel, base and working hands in view. The release photograph is a good starting arrangement, not an obligation to repeat it exactly.

A long-lived early release

The archive records a September 2003 release and July 2008 retirement. That span places AK022 among the earlier sets that remained available through several years of the range’s development. It is useful catalog context, but it says nothing certain about how many survived complete. Judge a current example by the correct figures, intact equipment and disclosed repairs rather than a seller’s unsupported rarity label.

The small parts decide completeness

Ask for close views around the mortar’s support structure and the crouching figure’s hands, then check the round held by the standing soldier and the observer’s binoculars. Overlapping figures can conceal a bent or missing element. A clear photograph with the three men spaced apart is often more useful than a dramatic low-angle image. Record the weapon and all three matching poses together in the collection inventory.
