King & Country · Napoleonic · NA008
The pipes immediately identify NA008’s role, but the pale trousers are equally useful. This miniature shows why “Scottish regiment” and “kilted soldier” should not be treated as interchangeable descriptions.

A different silhouette from the riflemen
The bag, chanter and drones create a cluster of shapes around the upper body. Green accents in the instrument and headgear stand out against the red jacket and light trousers. The figure’s stance is relatively quiet, allowing the instrument to remain the centre of attention. It complements the musket poses without duplicating their long diagonals.
Music gives a group another purpose
Place the piper with soldiers halted or preparing to move and the collection becomes a scene about regimental life, not just exchange of fire. The pipes should be visible from the front quarter. A mounted officer placed too close behind can swallow their outline; a slightly offset arrangement works better. The flag bearer NA009 can provide a second focus, with the two figures separated enough that the staff and drones do not overlap.
Buying an instrument-heavy figure
Check the tips of the drones, the chanter and the connections around the hands. Missing pipe sections can be difficult to notice against a dark background. Ask for a light-background photograph and compare the headgear with the NA008 reference. Keep a separate note of any repaired instrument parts. Their condition matters because the pipes, rather than a weapon or a dramatic stance, are the sculpt’s main reason for being in the range.
