The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS256

WS256 holds his rifle diagonally across his body and stands watching. The comparatively settled pose gives the Handschar group a pause between the pointing and advancing figures, allowing the face and clothing to remain the main focus.

The historical frame is specific

The U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum dates the division’s recruitment to 1943 and deployment in Bosnia and Croatia to 1944.

This is a Bosnian Waffen-SS subject within that wartime formation, rather than a generic representation of a nationality or faith.

The uniform must be read with the unit record

The Bundesarchiv documents war crimes by Handschar personnel during the division’s Balkan operations. That context belongs alongside discussion of the red fez and other distinctive clothing.

The figure itself is anonymous. Its pose does not establish an individual biography or a particular incident.

The stillness is the collecting difference

The rifle rests across the front with the hands close together, producing a quieter shape than an extended pointing arm or a gun carried over the shoulder.

Placed beside WS257, the standing watcher provides a contrast with the advancing rifleman. The two figures share their broad equipment identity while presenting different levels of movement.

The red headgear first connects WS256 to the group, but the diagonal rifle and balanced stance identify the individual release. Those details are especially useful when several similar figures are offered without boxes.

For a display, leave enough space to see the face and both hands. The figure’s interest is the attentive, stationary posture, and a crowded arrangement can conceal the subtle difference that separates it from the more active men around it.

Keeping the code, pose and historical affiliation together makes the catalog entry useful as a reference.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS256 product record lists a release date of December 2013 and a retirement date of April 2022. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
