The Operation ToyBox catalog · WS182

WS182 marches in a long greatcoat with a helmet, rifle and pack. He is better covered in military clothing than the older civilian-coated man of WS181, but his age and expression keep the figure firmly within the late-war Volkssturm group.

The equipment changes the outline

The helmet and pack give this man a more conventional military silhouette. The long coat extends the body almost to the lower legs, while the shouldered rifle and carried gear suggest departure rather than immediate combat.

His walking posture is restrained. There is no dramatic charge or raised weapon; the figure’s interest comes from the burden of equipment and the impression of an older man setting out.

Uniform pieces did not make a trained army

The German Historical Museum’s Volkssturm history describes inadequate equipment and rushed training among the late-war formations. Some units surrendered or dispersed when they encountered the enemy, while others fought at heavy cost.

The greatcoat and helmet on this miniature should therefore not be read as proof of a normal, fully prepared infantry soldier. The historical setting is the Nazi regime’s emergency mobilization during the final phase of the war.

Compare the two older men

WS181 and WS182 work well together because their differences are meaningful. Civilian clothing, issued garments, caps and helmets could coexist in the same broader mobilization. Keeping the figures slightly separated allows those contrasts to remain visible.

A road edge or a simple town setting suits the marching pose. There is no need to invent a destination or a named battle to explain the figure. When checking a loose example, compare the rifle, pack and headgear with the reference. WS182 adds another face to the catalog’s account of the war’s end, showing how the appearance of a soldier could be assembled from equipment even when the preparation behind it was profoundly uneven.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived WS182 product record lists a release date of March 2011 and a retirement date of March 2014. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
