The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL028

AL028 presents Allenby upright on a chestnut horse, wearing a sun helmet and carrying the composed bearing of a senior commander. The white markings on the horse and pale saddlecloth give the figure a clean, formal appearance beside the more heavily loaded charging troopers.

Ajax and the mounted portrait

The release description names the horse as Ajax. The miniature is a mounted character study, with the rider’s upright posture providing a calm center while the horse’s head and legs give the composition its shape.

It is especially effective beside AL029’s mounted Chauvel. Different headgear and horse colours distinguish the two men before the viewer reaches their labels.

Beersheba was part of a larger plan

The National Army Museum’s Allenby biography explains his change of approach after the failed Gaza attacks: pressure toward Gaza accompanied an attack farther east at Beersheba. The campaign then moved toward Jerusalem, and a renewed offensive in 1918 led to victory farther north.

That wider setting matters when collecting a commander figure. Allenby’s place in the AL range is not limited to watching one famous mounted assault; he represents the coordination of several arms and formations over a much larger campaign.

The man on horseback also knew when to dismount

The museum’s Palestine teaching notes recall his decision to enter Jerusalem on foot. It makes an interesting contrast with the model: a mounted portrait and a famous ceremonial choice show different aspects of the same commander.

A quiet focal point

I would place AL028 near a staff officer or signaling group, where the upright pose feels engaged with the work around it. Leave enough room beside the horse to see the saddlecloth and rider’s lower legs. The figure supplies a recognizable personality, but its best contribution is to draw the collection outward from individual actions toward the planning behind them.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL028 product record lists a release date of December 2011 and a retirement date of September 2013. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
