The Operation ToyBox catalog · AL008

With AL008, the early AL collection gives the opposing infantryman a clear place in the scene. He stands with his rifle shouldered, legs apart and attention fixed down the barrel. The pale uniform and wrapped-looking headgear create a very different outline from the Australian slouch hats and mounted figures.

Read the figure from the rifle outward

The straight rifle line dominates this pose. The wooden stock carries a warm colour across the front of the light uniform, while the darker belt and ammunition equipment break up the torso. His feet are firmly separated on the small textured base.

This standing position works particularly well beside AL009, the kneeling firing figure. Their different heights create an infantry group with readable individual poses rather than a row of repeated silhouettes.

An Ottoman rifle has a history of its own

The Australian War Memorial preserves a Turkish Model 1890 Mauser captured at Lone Pine. Its German manufacture and Ottoman markings provide a tangible example of the equipment carried by the empire’s soldiers. That museum object is a historical comparison, not a claim that every tiny detail of AL008 identifies the same rifle model.

Looking at such an artifact shifts attention away from the horsemen long enough to consider the defenders’ equipment. The Ottoman infantry were a substantial subject in their own right, with weapons, uniforms and campaign experiences worth examining.

Build the position around the men

A low earthwork can place AL008 within a defensive scene, but keep the rifle and hands visible above it. The figure is already standing on its own base; excessively tall cover can make his firing posture difficult to understand.

Alongside the loading and ready poses from the same early release group, he helps establish a position occupied by several soldiers doing different things. That is his strongest contribution to the AL catalog: a clear, uncomplicated infantry action that gives the famous mounted charge an opposing human presence.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived AL008 product record lists a release date of May 2010 and a retirement date of April 2014. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
