The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD222

A long antenna rises above DD222’s helmet as he brings the handset to his face. The 82nd Airborne radioman holds his weapon in the other hand, but communication is clearly the activity that defines the figure.

The first day’s communications were fragile

The 82nd Airborne’s after-action report records lost signal equipment and delayed radio contact with the 4th Infantry Division and England until the night of 6–7 June.

The report discusses larger headquarters equipment as well as the communication problem. It does not identify the small radio sculpted on DD222, but it gives the manufacturer’s scene of seeking contact a strong historical context.

A portable radio was still a substantial object

Motorola’s history of the SCR300 describes a backpack FM radio produced during the war and used in Normandy. Such equipment makes a useful period comparison, without assigning an exact radio model where the DD222 release record does not specify one.

The miniature turns that equipment into a tall vertical silhouette: pack, antenna and handset all pull attention away from the lowered weapon.

The specialist who connects the group

DD220’s officer can stand nearby to create a command-and-communications pairing. A map reader adds another information task, giving a small airborne scene more variety than several men aiming in one direction.

Keep the antenna clear of shelving and neighbouring scenery. It is the figure’s most conspicuous projection and one of the details to inspect on a secondhand example.

DD222 belongs in the collection because finding the rest of the force was part of the airborne operation. The raised handset gives that essential work a simple, readable form in miniature.

Release record and collecting notes

Sager’s archived DD222 product record lists a release date of August 2013 and a retirement date of September 2018. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
