The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD172
DD172 is one of the D-Day range’s deliberately irreverent subjects: a British soldier urinates toward a framed Hitler portrait on the ground. The joke depends on the contrast between an image of authority and the soldier’s complete lack of respect for it.

The title belongs to a wider culture of mockery
Wartime propaganda often attacked Hitler through ridicule. The Walt Disney Family Museum’s account of the 1943 film Der Fuehrer’s Face provides one well-known example of that tradition.
The similar wording offers useful cultural context. It does not establish that King & Country licensed the film or based this miniature on a scene from it.
The portrait completes the composition
The saved reference shows the framed image at the soldier’s feet. Without it, the figure would still represent a bodily action, but the intended target of the joke would be lost.
The rifle remains slung over his shoulder, and the uniform and equipment connect him with the British infantry released around the same period.
Humour without an invented incident
The archived description presents the soldier expressing contempt for Hitler and Nazi racial ideology. It does not identify a real man, a dated photograph or a particular building from which the portrait came.
The catalog therefore treats the piece as a satirical miniature, rather than a documented encounter in Normandy or Germany.
Why the unusual subject belongs
A complete retrospective should preserve the range’s oddities as well as its conventional firing figures and vehicles. DD172 records a manufacturer choosing a blunt comic gesture within a historical series.
For a display, leave the portrait visible and keep the scene compact. The figure and framed image already supply the intended relationship; additional dramatic scenery is not necessary to explain the release.
Release record and collecting notes
Sager’s archived DD172 product record lists a release date of June 2012 and a retirement date of June 2015. These are catalog dates, rather than a statement about today’s secondhand availability. Compare the seller’s actual photographs with the reference image here, including any projecting equipment and the base; a familiar box title alone is not a condition report.
