The Operation ToyBox catalog · DD030

A tank collection can tell you who led the advance. A Priest makes you think about the firepower that helped the advance happen. King & Country DD030 brings that supporting role onto the shelf, with an open fighting compartment that puts the crew almost as much on display as the vehicle.

The set at a glance

DD030 is King & Country’s retired M7 Priest self-propelled gun. Sager’s catalog record dates its release to February 2002 and retirement to September 2003. That places it among the earlier DD vehicles, an interesting collecting chapter in its own right.

The catalog photograph shows the features that give this model its personality: the short howitzer projecting from the front, the prominent white star, the circular machine-gun position, and crew figures distributed around the open compartment. Display it slightly below eye level and there is much more to see than a simple side profile suggests.

Why it was called a Priest

The nickname came from the raised machine-gun position, which reminded British troops of a church pulpit. Underneath that memorable outline was a practical answer to a pressing problem: armored formations needed artillery that could move with them. The M7 entered service in 1942 with a 105mm howitzer; early vehicles used the M3 medium-tank chassis. The Army Historical Foundation’s M7 history explains its development as mobile fire support for tanks and infantry.

That distinction changes how the miniature reads. The open top and large gun do not make it a conventional turreted tank. This is a working space for artillerymen. In a display, ammunition and crew activity make better storytelling companions than an arrangement suggesting a tank duel.

A surprising second career

Some Priests eventually carried infantry instead of a howitzer. In Normandy, surplus vehicles were converted into armored personnel carriers by removing their guns. These early Kangaroos entered use in August 1944, before converted Ram tanks took over the role. The Tank Museum’s Kangaroo history follows that unusual transformation.

DD030 represents the artillery vehicle, not the conversion, but the connection gives it a welcome conversation starter: the same basic machine could deliver shells or help carry the men advancing behind them.

Making room for it in a collection

For a shelf arrangement, try placing the Priest behind an infantry group with a little open space around the crew compartment. A road edge or field boundary gives the vehicle a setting without hiding its most interesting details. Beside the DD024 M3 Lee, it also creates a useful comparison between two very different uses of the early American medium-tank family.

Before buying a retired example

Compare the offered vehicle and crew with the catalog photograph rather than relying on a listing’s piece count. Ask for a clear overhead view and photographs of both track runs. Check projecting gun parts, exposed edges, crew paint, and any repairs; a distant photograph can make a missing figure or damaged fitting surprisingly easy to overlook. Confirm which figures and packaging are included in that particular sale.

The appeal here is the combination of a distinctive vehicle and a visible crew at work. A complete, well-presented example tells that story best; the word “rare” in a listing title tells you much less.
